CM Prem Singh Tamang

Gangtok, April 20: Amid rising COVID-19 cases in Sikkim, CM Prem Singh Tamang Golay announced that schools in Sikkim would be shut till April 30.

The decision comes after schools were initially announced shut till April 20 earlier this month through a notification from the state home department.

CM Prem Singh Tamang also announced that government offices would function with only 50% workforce from April 22 to curtail the virus spread. This comes when the state government has been following the recent punctuality drive against government employees. The CM did not clarify if the ‘drive’ would continue.

On April 19, the state home department’s protocol section at the Tashiling secretariat was declared as a containment zone, following two officials testing positive. This office releases various government notifications and safety protocols in the state.

Former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling also joined the COVID safety drive by ending all socio-political events and scheduled visits to various villages in the State since April 19, amidst rising COVID 19 cases in the state and the country.

But the same could not be said about the ruling government, as Golay and his cabinet, were present at MG Marg on April 20 to be part of the Fisheries Department’s ‘Fish Mela’ event, where he made the announcement.

There are different stalls set up at MG Marg as part of the Mela, which will take place till April 21.
