Manipur Security

Imphal, June 08: Security forces in Manipur have made significant progress in recovering weapons and grenades during ongoing combing operations. In a joint operation conducted on Wednesday, a total of 29 weapons, including automatic firearms, mortars, hand grenades, and small arms ammunition, were seized along with other warlike stores.

The recovery of these weapons is crucial in restoring peace and stability to the violence-affected region.

In addition to retrieving snatched weapons that were in the illegal possession of the local population, security forces have intensified patrolling activities to prevent clashes and maintain law and order. Prior to the search operations, locals were urged to voluntarily surrender any illegal or snatched weapons.

Last week, over 140 weapons were surrendered to the police in response to a stern warning issued by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The warning emphasized that strict action would be taken against anyone found in possession of illegal weapons.

The tensions in Manipur initially arose from clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The clashes were triggered by a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized on May 3 in the hill districts, protesting the demand of the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Since then, the state has experienced several episodes of unrest.

The Meitei community has called for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur to identify and address the issue of illegal immigrants.

On the other hand, the Kuki community has been advocating for the creation of Kukiland, a separate state. The conflicting demands led to confrontations between the two communities, exacerbating the situation in Manipur.

The recovery of weapons and grenades by security forces is a significant step towards restoring peace and security in Manipur.

It is hoped that these efforts, combined with community engagement and dialogue, will help resolve the underlying issues and promote harmony among the various communities in the state. The authorities remain committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents in Manipur.
