Itanagar, May 10: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) India celebrates as the Sela Tunnel receives official recognition as the highest tunnel in the country by the International Book of Honour, England.

Stretching over 2.598 kilometers, this remarkable tunnel stands tall at an altitude of 13,000 feet along Tezpur-Tawang Road.

Constructed by BRO India, its primary purpose is to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to the strategically significant Tawang Region throughout the year.


Expressing his delight, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu shared the news on his social media handle, stating, “I’m thrilled to learn that the International Book of Honour, England, has acknowledged the Sela Tunnel as the highest in the country. This 2.598-km long engineering marvel by @BROindia at an altitude of 13,000 ft on the Tezpur-Tawang road has greatly enhanced connectivity in the strategic region of Arunachal Pradesh.”

The inauguration of the Sela Tunnel, the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel, took place in Arunachal Pradesh on March 9, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi gracing the occasion.

Nestled at a breathtaking altitude of 13,000 feet, the Sela Tunnel holds immense strategic significance, guaranteeing all-weather connectivity to Tawang, a critical area in Arunachal Pradesh.

During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “You must have heard of ‘Modi Ki Guarantee’. You will understand its significance once you visit Arunachal. The entire Northeast bears witness to this. I laid the foundation of the Sela Tunnel here in 2019, and today it has been inaugurated.”
