Commonwealth Games Assam

Guwahati, July 28: As many as seven sportspersons from Assam will participate in the Commonwealth Games 2022 which is all set to kick start on Thursday.

The game will witness participation from 72 countries, featuring more than 4500 sportspersons competing with each other for a podium finish.

India has named a 33-member team for the Commonwealth Games (CWG), out of which seven are from Assam.

The seven sportspersons from Assam who are all set to participate in CWG 2022 are:

  • Lovlina Borgohain, Boxing (Women’s 7okg)
  • Hima Das, Athletics Women’s ( 4x100m relay)
  • Shiva Thapa, boxing (men 63.5kg)
  • Popy Hazarika, weight lifting (women’s 59 kg)
  • Tanya Chowdhury, Lawn bowls (women’s triples, women’s fours)

This Thursday, the 2022 commonwealth games will officially open in Birmingham in the United Kingdom. It will be the 22nd edition of the competition.

This is the third time that England will host the commonwealth games after London on 1930 and Manchester in 2002, and the seventh edition to take place in the UK.

With 72 different nations and territories set to compete for glory this time around, the 2022 games are set to be the biggest ever with 280 different events across 20 sports scheduled to take place over a two-week period.
