Gangtok, Oct 24: Key leaders of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), including former election candidate Bimal Rai, have resigned en masse on October 24, posing a significant challenge for the party just weeks before the by-elections on November 13.

The resignations, which come from the Namchi-Singithang constituency, leave the SDF in a precarious position as they prepare for the upcoming polls. Bimal Rai, who previously represented the SDF in the last general election, is at the forefront of the group that has stepped down.

In their resignation letter addressed to the party president, the leaders emphasized a change in political direction rather than any internal strife.

They stated, “This decision follows careful consideration and reflection on our personal and political journeys. While we are parting ways with the party, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities and experiences we gained as members of the SDF.”

The letter also conveyed their sense of honor in contributing to the party’s mission and expressed appreciation for the “support and camaraderie” from fellow members, leaders, and supporters.

Moreover, they clarified, “Our resignation is not driven by disagreement but is a choice to pursue a path that better aligns with our current goals and values.”

This mass resignation creates a leadership void within the local SDF organization, which could significantly impact their campaign strategy for the forthcoming by-election.
