Gangtok, July 27: In a progressive move to prioritize the well-being of its government employees and foster a family-friendly work environment, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced the introduction of 12-month maternity leave and 1-month paternity leave for government employees.

The announcement was made during the annual general meeting of the Sikkim State Civil Service Officers’ Association (SSCSOA) and is set to bring about significant changes in the service rules to implement these benefits.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s decision to grant 12-month maternity leave goes beyond the current statutory provision under the Maternity Benefit Act 1961, which entitles working women to 6 months or 26 weeks of paid maternity leave.

The extension of maternity leave to a year is a commendable step towards supporting new mothers in balancing their professional responsibilities with their crucial role as caregivers during the critical early months of their child’s life.

In addition to the extended maternity leave, the Sikkim government’s new policy will also introduce a noteworthy 1-month paternity leave for government employees.
