Gangtok, Jan 05: Sikkim made history as five transgender individuals registered as voters for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the state’s democratic landscape.

D Anandan, Chief Electoral Officer of Sikkim, revealed this development as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity and representation.

As of January 1, 2024, Sikkim’s total voter count reached 462,456, showcasing a notable net increase of 4,050 from the draft roll. During the special summary revision, 13,716 new voters were added, while 9,666 deletions occurred, primarily due to deaths or individuals permanently relocating from the state.

The inclusion of five transgender voters underscores Sikkim’s commitment to diversity and the representation of marginalized communities in the democratic process.

D Anandan expressed satisfaction at this historic moment, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that every eligible citizen, regardless of gender identity, participates in shaping the state’s future.

The Chief Electoral Officer highlighted the success of a dedicated drive aimed at enrolling persons with disabilities (PwD) in the electoral process. In collaboration with the Women and Child Welfare Department, district collectors and Booth Level Officers visited the homes of PwD individuals, overcoming barriers that might hinder their ability to visit registration offices.

This focused initiative resulted in the registration of 3,856 disabled voters in Sikkim’s voter list as of January 1, 2024. D Anandan extended gratitude to citizens who contributed to this achievement and urged continued support in identifying eligible persons with disabilities, emphasizing their crucial role in upholding the principles of democracy.
