Teesta River

Gangtok, Oct 04: Heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, has caused the Teesta River in Sikkim to swell to an all-time high, resulting in widespread destruction, including landslides and flooding.

The latest reports indicate that approximately 25 army vehicles, parts of the ATTC college, and a few army personnel have been washed away in the wake of this disaster. The situation remains critical as there is a looming threat of further damages. South Lhonal Lake is on the brink of an outburst, which could potentially trigger flash floods. Moreover, there is a heightened risk of the South Khonak River overflowing, indicating a potentially volatile situation.

In response to the crisis, authorities have issued evacuation warnings to residents in low-lying areas, particularly in Sangkalang, Bringbong, Ohidang, Dikchu, Makha, Singtam, Rangpo, and Melli. People have been advised to move to safer locations promptly to ensure their safety.

State Disaster Management Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha, along with Minister BS Panth and LB Das, along with district collectors and officials, swiftly reached the flood-affected areas, including Singtam, Adarsh Goan, and adjoining regions. Their presence underscores the government’s commitment to managing the crisis and providing support to affected communities.

Rescue operations are currently underway in the affected areas, with authorities and disaster response teams working tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and recover any individuals who may be stranded. The state government is taking all necessary steps to address the immediate challenges posed by this natural calamity.
