Guwahati, Jan 02: A 20-year-old student in Guwahati became the victim of molestation at the hands of an Uber driver on January 1st, adding to the growing concerns over the safety of ride-sharing services.

The unsettling incident unfolded at 6 pm when the student booked an Uber bike to travel from West Jyoti Nagar to Lachit Nagar. The accused driver, identified as Bijoy Haloi, with the vehicle registration number AS01FE9202, reportedly committed the crime during the journey.

The victim shared her harrowing experience, stating that the molestation occurred near Krishna Nagar behind the Assam Engineering Institute. The accused rider allegedly touched her private parts, and when confronted, he offered excuses, claiming he was adjusting his pants and not attempting any misconduct.

Disturbed by the situation, the 20-year-old demanded the driver stop the vehicle immediately. However, he refused to comply with her request, prompting her to take off her helmet and strike the driver to draw attention. She also raised her voice, seeking help from passersby, which proved instrumental in gathering assistance.

“I asked him to stop the scooty, but he wasn’t doing that, so I had to take off my helmet and hit him. Then I had to scream and shout for help so that people gathered around me, doing that helped me as people gathered to help me following which he had stopped the vehicle. I also had to stop him from eloping away,” the victim narrated.

Residents intervened, providing support to the distressed student and subsequently contacting the police. A formal complaint was lodged, leading to the accused’s 24-hour custody. Additionally, the victim filed a complaint on Uber’s official platform.

This incident adds to the rising instances of harassment, overcharging, ill-treatment, and molestation faced by daily users of cab services in Guwahati. Authorities are urged to take stringent measures to ensure the safety and security of passengers utilizing ride-sharing services.
