1. Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) to be implemented before Lok Sabha elections.
2. Rules for the CAA, aimed at non-Muslim immigrants from specified countries, are ready for issuance.
3. The act facilitates Indian citizenship for immigrants who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

New Delhi, Jan 03: Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is set to be implemented well in advance of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as the rules governing the process are ready for issuance, according to a government official.

The CAA aims to provide a pathway for non-Muslim immigrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, to acquire Indian citizenship.

The official confirmed that the rules are prepared, and the process for eligible individuals to obtain Indian citizenship will be operationalized soon.

To facilitate the application process, the government has established an online portal where applicants can submit their requests for citizenship.

Applicants will need to declare the year they entered India without proper travel documents, and no additional documentation will be required, simplifying the procedure and potentially expediting the citizenship-granting process.

The official emphasized that the notification of the rules would precede the announcement of election dates, ensuring a timely implementation of the law.

While the exact date for the notification has not been disclosed as of January 3rd, 2024, the assurance from the government official indicates that it will be a priority shortly.

This strategic move underscores the government’s commitment to enacting the CAA and facilitating the naturalization process for eligible individuals.
