Ziro, Jan 30: In the verdant expanse of Arunachal Pradesh’s Ziro Valley, an agricultural engineer turned entrepreneur, Tage Rita, is fermenting a revolution, one bottle at a time.

Her organic Kiwi wine brand, Naara Aaba, has not only garnered national recognition but has also become a noteworthy case study in innovation and women’s entrepreneurship on the global stage.

Rita’s pioneering venture, Naara Aaba, meaning “father’s name” in the local dialect, has gained distinction as India’s first kiwi wine.

The product has earned accolades and will serve as a case study by prominent institutions such as the Richard School of Business Foundation, Richard Ivey School of Business, and the University of Western Ontario.

The genesis of Rita’s journey dates back to 2017 when she invested in a boutique winery to address a local challenge of surplus kiwi production without guaranteed buyers.

Her innovative solution involved transforming these abundant fruits into wine, creating a stable market for the Kiwi Growers Cooperative Society and individual farmers in Arunachal Pradesh.

The winemaking process at Naara Aaba is a blend of tradition and modernity, refined over six years of meticulous research and planning.

Initially boasting a capacity of 20,000 liters, the winery has now expanded to produce 60,000 liters of wine, offering support to 300 farmers in its inaugural year.

The wine, best savored between six and eight degrees Celsius, undergoes a four-month journey from crushing to bottling.

Rita’s achievements extend beyond the realm of wine production.

Her remarkable success story has earned her numerous accolades, including the Women Transforming India Awards 2018 by the United Nations and NITI Aayog, along with the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2022.

Her company has emerged as a significant employer, providing jobs to up to 100 seasonal workers in addition to the 25 regular staff members.

The financial success of the Naara Aaba brand, generating Rs 12 crore in revenue, stands as a testament to Rita’s entrepreneurial prowess.

Her impact has reverberated not only in the world of business but also as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, symbolizing a beacon for sustainable agriculture in the region.
