Weather Update, May 23: Starting today and lasting until May 27, a thunderstorm warning has been issued for several districts in North and South Bengal.
The alert comes as a result of the anticipated formation of a Cyclonic Circulation over Jharkhand and the surrounding area, coupled with a significant influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
As a consequence, an increased likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and hail is expected across the affected districts during this period.
The forecast indicates that rain and thunderstorms are very likely to occur in multiple locations throughout the districts of West Bengal between May 23 and May 27, 2023.
South Bengal has been placed under an Orange warning, indicating a higher level of caution. On May 23 and 24, thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph, accompanied by lightning and hail, are expected in one or two places within the districts.
On May 25, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph are likely to occur in isolated locations. From May 26 to May 27, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are expected in select areas across South Bengal.
In North Bengal, a similar Orange warning has been issued. Thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, and hail are anticipated in one or two places on May 23 and 24.

On May 25, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to occur, with heavy rainfall (07-11 cm) expected in certain districts including Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, and Alipurduar. From May 26 to May 27, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are expected in the North Bengal districts.
The possible impacts of these thunderstorms include damage to crops and horticulture, reduced visibility, damage to unsecured structures, and the risk of landslides in hilly areas.
To stay safe during thunderstorms and lightning, it is advised to seek shelter in a secure location and avoid open areas. Taking cover under trees or near electric poles should be avoided. Additionally, using apps such as Damini for real-time lightning alerts can provide valuable information.
