Aizawl, Dec 20: In a tragic incident, three individuals are feared dead as a stone quarry collapsed in the Mamit district of Mizoram. The victims, all non-Mizo workers employed by the SLP Company, were trapped under the debris at the Zathanga quarry in Mamit district’s Pukzing sector.

The incident involved an excavator and its operators along with a helper laborer who were working at the site when the quarry collapsed. Rescue operations are currently underway to retrieve the trapped workers, but their identities are yet to be confirmed.

This unfortunate event comes after a similar tragedy in November 2022 when 12 workers lost their lives in a mine collapse in Hanahthial district near Muardarh village.

The Mamit district incident highlights the risks associated with quarrying and mining activities, emphasizing the importance of stringent safety measures to protect the lives of workers in such environments.

The ongoing rescue efforts are a testament to the urgency in responding to such incidents and minimizing casualties.

As authorities continue their rescue operations, attention is drawn to the need for thorough investigations into the circumstances leading to the collapse and the implementation of preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

Worker safety should remain a top priority, and stringent regulations must be in place and enforced to ensure the well-being of those involved in such hazardous occupations.
