Kolkata, Dec 16: The trial run for the new Garia-Ruby Metro line in Kolkata has commenced, marking a significant step towards the inauguration scheduled for December 24.

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has initiated inspections along the East-West Metro’s Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section. This week-long evaluation by the safety regulator is crucial for India’s first under-river Metro.

The approval from CMRS, operating under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is a mandatory requirement before the commissioning of any Metro line.

The CMRS team, consisting of Brij Mohan, Lalit Kumar, and Pramod Kumar, started the inspection process with a focus on the Howrah Maidan terminal station. The inspection was extended until approximately 7.30 pm on the first day.

The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), the implementing agency for the 16km East-West Metro corridor, is striving to meet the December-end deadline for commencing operations on India’s inaugural under-river Metro route, connecting Esplanade and Howrah Maidan stations.

In a unique development for a Kolkata Metro project, CMRS has been invited alongside the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety for the inspection. This collaborative effort emphasizes the commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the new Garia-Ruby Metro line, a crucial addition to Kolkata’s public transportation network.
