Tripura electric pole

Agartala, Aug 20: In a disturbing incident that unfolded in Tripura, a man, and a woman were publicly humiliated for hours, shackled to an electric pole, over an alleged connection. This shocking act of vigilante justice has sent shockwaves across the region and raised questions about the state of law and order.

The man involved in this incident is reportedly married and has two children, while the young woman is just 20 years old and lives with her cousin, brother, and sister-in-law. Videos of the incident, which were widely shared on social media, depict a horrifying scene of public humiliation and violence.

In the videos, an elderly woman can be seen tugging at the woman’s hair and continually striking her, while the man is chained to the same electric pole. A crowd gathers to witness the assault, but no one seems to intervene. Another man in the video can be seen wagging his finger and verbally chastising the pair.

This deplorable event occurred in the town of Belonia, located in the South Tripura region. The reason behind this brutal act is alleged to be a love connection between the married man and the 20-year-old woman, both of whom resided in the same neighborhood. On a fateful Saturday morning, they were forcibly apprehended and subjected to a “shalishi baithak,” which translates to an impromptu public trial through a kangaroo court.

Eventually, the police were alerted to the incident and intervened to free the victims from their degrading and humiliating predicament. While the authorities have launched an investigation and initiated legal proceedings, none of the parties involved, including the victims themselves, have chosen to file official complaints.

However, there have been some developments in the case. The young woman’s cousin’s brother has been taken into custody, suspected of involvement in the physical assault. Additionally, her sister-in-law is also under suspicion for her role in the violent incident.

This deeply disturbing incident raises several troubling questions about the state of justice and law enforcement in the region. Vigilante justice, like what transpired in this case, is an affront to the principles of a just and fair legal system. It underscores the importance of strengthening law enforcement agencies and educating communities about the importance of due process and the rule of law.

Furthermore, it highlights the urgent need for community-based awareness campaigns on issues related to gender, relationships, and individual rights. The public humiliation of the young woman is a stark reminder of the pervasive gender-based violence that continues to plague societies worldwide. Such incidents must be met with unequivocal condemnation and a commitment to eradicating gender-based violence.

In conclusion, the appalling incident in Tripura serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that persist in achieving justice and equality. It is imperative that law enforcement agencies take swift and decisive action to ensure that justice is served and that incidents of vigilante justice are met with the full force of the law. Additionally, community-based initiatives and awareness campaigns are vital to addressing the root causes of such incidents and fostering a culture of respect, tolerance, and equality for all.
