Agartala, Sept 27: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has called upon the state government to take punitive action against a Tripura Police Sub-Inspector and provide compensation to a victim for alleged torture, harassment, and severe human rights violations.

According to a THRC press release, the case stemmed from a complaint lodged with the Tripura Human Rights Commission by Mani Das (Shib), the wife of Sujit Kumar Shib from Narshingarh. The complaint, filed as Complaint No. 35 of 2023, alleged that on September 11, 2022, two individuals, namely Suman Miah and Rabbil Miah, forcibly removed her husband, Sujit Kumar Shib, from their home, took him to Airport P.S., and then Sub-Inspector Biswajit Das transported him to Ramnagar Outpost. Along the way, her husband was allegedly subjected to merciless beatings by local residents.

Recognizing the gravity of the allegations, the Commission initiated an investigation and instructed the Director-General of Police, Tripura, and the Commission’s Investigation Wing to probe the matter further, as outlined in the press release.

Following the submission of reports by the Director-General of Police, Tripura, and the Commission’s Investigation Wing, the Commission conducted a thorough examination of the reports and related documents.

Upon reviewing the records, the Commission concluded that Sub-Inspector Biswajit Das had engaged in serious misconduct and egregiously violated the human rights of Sujit Kumar Shib. The Commission held Sub-Inspector Biswajit Das fully accountable for this gross violation of the human rights of a less privileged citizen and ordered him to pay Rs. 1,00,000/- in compensation to the victim, Sujit Kumar Shib.

Furthermore, the Commission mandated that the Home Department, Government of Tripura, disburse the specified amount to the victim within one month. It also directed the government to recover the said sum from the salary or other receivables of Sub-Inspector Biswajit Das.
