Agartala, March 31: Two iconic products from Tripura, Mata Bari Peda and Pachra, have been granted Geographical Indications (GI) Tags, marking their cultural significance and unique quality.
The Dewanbari Mahila Cluster Behumukhi Samabaya Samity Ltd, led by president Ms. Padma Buli Jamatia, applied for the GI tag for Tripura Pachra-Rignai textile, a traditional attire made by skilled weavers on handlooms.
Pachra, worn as a lower garment by Tripura women, is often paired with a risa, covering the upper body.
Meanwhile, the Peda of Mata Bari, applied for by Matabari Mahila Cluster Level Bahumukhi Samabaya Samity Ltd under president Baby Das, also received the GI tag.

This sweet dish, prepared from the pindi variety of khoa and sugar, holds religious significance and is offered as “Prasad” during temple worship.
With nearly 500 people involved in the ‘Peda’ trade, including shop owners and workers, women play a crucial role in milk production and quality assurance, forming the backbone of the Matabari traditional Peda.
The Matabari Peda market, a hub for this revered sweet, boasts several stores selling the delicacy, which has become synonymous with the region’s culinary heritage.
The ‘Peda’ traders’ association has decided to raise prices after five years, reflecting its enduring popularity and demand.
Additionally, the number of ‘Peda’ shops is set to increase, catering to the growing interest in this iconic Tripura delicacy.
