Manipur Mobs

Imphal, Aug 04: In a shocking and concerning incident, mobs targeted two security posts in the Bishnupur district in Manipur, resulting in the looting of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition.

The situation escalated further as an encounter between the armed attackers and security forces led to the tragic loss of a security personnel’s life at Koutruk in Bishnupur district. The events unfolded in a volatile and tense atmosphere, with sporadic incidents of firing and gathering of unruly mobs in different places across the state.

Late on Thursday night, a Manipur Police statement confirmed that a mob stormed the Keirenphabi Police outpost and Thangalawai Police outpost of Manipur Armed Police’s 2nd Battalion in Bishnupur. The attackers successfully seized a large cache of arms and ammunition during the rampage. Reports indicate that the mob comprised both men and women, making it a grave security concern.

In their attempt to seize more weapons, the mob also targeted the Heingang and Singjamei police stations in the same district. However, security forces effectively repelled their advances, preventing further loss of arms and ammunition from these posts.

During the clashes, an exchange of fire occurred between the armed attackers and security forces at various locations, including Koutruk, Haraothel, and Senjam Chirang areas. Tragically, two individuals, including security personnel, sustained bullet injuries in the crossfire. The security forces retaliated with force, managing to drive away the attackers in a bid to restore order.

In the aftermath of the incident, an unruly crowd of approximately 500-600 persons gathered at Phougakchao Ikhai, situated along the borders of the Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. As the situation remained tense, security forces resorted to using tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. However, this intervention resulted in around 25 individuals sustaining minor injuries during the chaotic dispersal.
