Weather Update, May 12: Influence of moist southerly winds blowing from Asani, widespread rain and thunderstorms will pour over North-Eastern India during the next five days.

The Cyclonic Storm Asani has weakened to a Deep Depression. And the system is expected to track north-northeastward off the Andhra Pradesh coast again, then further weaken into a Depression during the daytime on Thursday. After that, it is expected to move northeastward while dissipating, but there is still a high degree of uncertainty due to variations in different models.

To the south, a trough and the confluence of winds will produce scattered rain and thunderstorms over the south Peninsula of India, especially Kerala and Lakshadweep during this period.

A weak Western Disturbance will affect Western Himalayan Region through Friday. In this period, isolated rain/snow is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand, with a chance of lightning.

Thursday (May 12)

  • Heavy rains are likely over isolated places of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
  • Widespread showers and thunderstorms are forecast over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
  • Fairly widespread rains and thunderstorms are expected over Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, and Lakshadweep.
  • Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
  • Isolated rain/snow is likely over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
  • Isolated rainfall is likely over East Utter Pradesh, Goa, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Rayalaseema, with a chance of thunderstorms.
  • Severe heatwave conditions are predicted over isolated places of West Rajasthan.
  • Heatwave conditions are likely over isolated places of Gujarat, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, South Haryana, South Punjab, and Delhi.

Friday (May 13)

  • Heavy to very heavy rains are likely over isolated places of Assam & Meghalaya.
  • Heavy rainfall is forecast over isolated places of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
  • Widespread rains and thunderstorms are predicted over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
  • Fairly widespread rains and thunderstorms are possible over Kerala and Lakshadweep.
  • Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
  • Isolated rain/snow is likely over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
