Weather Update: April 14: Under the influence of strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to the northeastern States at lower tropospheric levels, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the next 5 days.

Accordingly, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange warning’ for the states of Assam and Meghalaya for Friday, advising citizens to ‘be prepared.

The other northeast states remained on a ‘yellow watch’. Rainfall amounts will generally run between 30-50 mm per day over North-Eastern India with higher amounts of 80-120mm per day also possible in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya.

5-day precipitation accumulation of 300-400 mm is possible over east Arunachal Pradesh, east Assam, and Meghalaya.

The following weather conditions are likely to occur over the next few days:

  • Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya during the next 4 days;
  • Isolated heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Thursday;
  • Isolated heavy rainfall over Nagaland and Manipur on Sunday;
  • Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Assam and Meghalaya during April 14-15;
  • Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh till Saturday.
