West Bengal Elections: Congress candidate dies of Covid-19 in Kolkata

Bengal, April 15: Congress candidate Rezaul Haque who was contesting the West Bengal polls from the Samserganj constituency in Murshidabad died of Covid-19 on Thursday.

He was being treated in a private hospital in Kolkata after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Rohan Mitra, Bengal Pradesh Congress Secretary, took to Twitter to share the news on Thursday morning. He wrote, “In Murshidabad district, Samserganj Assembly INC India candidate Rezaul Haque passed away last night due to Corona! The reality we are facing! Wake up and smell the coffee. Survive this year and be alive to see the next new year of the Bengali calendar

The West Bengal Congress candidate Rezaul Haque’s death comes at a time when the state has four more phases of polling left. The Election Commission has called for an all-party meet on Friday to speak about the maintenance of Covid protocol during elections.

On Wednesday, West Bengal recorded its highest single-day spike of 5,892 new cases and 24 deaths. In the last 24 hours, 2,297 patients recovered in the state.
