He referred to the last 10 years as the most crucial decade for the Northeast, experiencing unparalleled development since India’s independence.

The Home Minister emphasized that the Northeast, grappling with issues related to ethnicity, language, borders, and extremism, has entered a fresh era of enduring peace during these transformative years.

Comparing this decade to the 75 years post-independence, Shah termed it a golden period for the region, attributing the positive changes to the Modi government’s dedicated approach.

Shah presented statistics showcasing a substantial decline in violent incidents in the Northeast. Between 2004 and 2014, the region witnessed 11,121 violent incidents, which reduced by 73 percent to 3,114 between 2014 and 2023. Security forces’ casualties decreased by 71 percent, from 458 to 132, and civilian deaths dropped by 86 percent.

He credited the decline in insurgency incidents to the surrender of over 8,900 members of militant groups in the last five years, emphasizing the interconnectedness of peace and prosperity for state development.

The Home Minister highlighted that the Modi government’s initiatives, including signing nine agreements and resolving law and order issues, contributed significantly to peace and stability in the Northeast.

Amit Shah also noted that, except for certain parts of Assam and Manipur, 75 percent of the areas covered under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in 2018 are no longer under its purview, indicating improved security conditions.
