Assam saplings

Guwahati, Sept 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently shared a glimpse of the state’s ambitious attempt to set a Guinness World Record by planting one crore saplings.

This massive plantation drive, named the “Amrit Brikshya Jan Andolan,” witnessed enthusiastic participation from people across the state, from the capital city of Dispur to remote areas like Bhairabkunda.

In a tweet, CM Sarma showcased the extraordinary sight of the largest-ever map of Assam made entirely of potted saplings. He remarked, “Mesmerizing visuals of the biggest-ever map of Assam made with potted saplings!”

This citizen-led movement aims to create a tree-based economy, promote environmental cleanliness, and celebrate the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is regarded as a champion of environmental conservation.

The plantation drive saw participation from approximately 40 lakh members of women’s self-help groups from various regions of Assam, with each member planting two commercially viable saplings. This collective effort contributed 80 lakh saplings to the initiative.

The remaining 20 lakh saplings were planted by individuals from diverse backgrounds, including anganwadi workers, tea garden laborers, government officials, police and forest personnel, as well as members of the general public.

The “Amrit Brikshya Jan Andolan” is a significant step toward establishing a tree-based economy in Assam, emphasizing the crucial role trees play in building a sustainable economy.

Assam, like many regions, has been grappling with deforestation challenges. Between 2011 and 2022, the state lost a staggering 670 square kilometers of forest cover. Over the past two decades, Assam has lost 3,060 square kilometers of tree cover, underscoring the urgency of reforestation efforts.

The government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has embarked on a mission to plant one crore commercial tree saplings within a span of two hours. This ambitious endeavor aims to highlight the pivotal role trees play in establishing a sustainable and resilient economy.

The plantation drive’s magnitude and citizen participation demonstrate a collective commitment to environmental conservation and the goal of achieving a greener, cleaner, and economically robust Assam.

As the saplings take root and grow, Assam envisions a future where a thriving tree-based economy coexists with a commitment to preserving the state’s natural beauty and ecological balance.
