1. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma cancels scheduled programs on Jan 18-19 to avoid clashes with Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
2. Sarma cites the pre-declaration of welfare scheme dates as coinciding with Rahul Gandhi’s yatra schedule.
3. The cancellation includes a Majuli program and ration card distribution events in Jorhat and Dergaon during the yatra’s passage.

Guwahati, Jan 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the cancellation of his pre-scheduled programs in the state’s upper districts on January 18-19 to prevent clashes with the Congress’ Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Sarma, addressing a press conference, emphasized that the dates for the welfare scheme coincided with Rahul Gandhi’s yatra schedule and were declared before being aware of his visit. He refuted Congress’ accusations of intentionally conflicting schedules for form distribution in rural women’s schemes.

As a goodwill gesture, Sarma canceled his program in Majuli on January 18, considering the small district’s administrative challenges during Rahul Gandhi’s event.

Furthermore, Sarma called off ration card distribution events in Jorhat and Dergaon on January 18 and 19, aligning with the yatra’s passage through those areas.

Despite these adjustments, he asserted that his government had demonstrated flexibility and a large-hearted approach.

Regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposed visit on January 20, Sarma clarified that the program was yet to be finalized, and efforts would be made to avoid coinciding with the yatra.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, covering 833 km across 17 districts of Assam, is scheduled to commence from Sivasagar on January 18.

Sarma claimed that people, except for a specific community, were reluctant to attend Congress meetings, expressing shame in their participation.

When questioned about the community, he named the ‘Miya Muslims,’ suggesting that even they were avoiding Congress events due to witnessing the benefits of government schemes under his administration.

Accusing the Congress yatra of promoting anti-Hindu sentiments, Sarma declared his government as pro-Hindu but clarified that it is not anti-Muslim, anti-Christian, or against any community.
