Tinsukia, Nov 09: A large protest led by the All Moran Students’ Union and the All Assam Motok Youth Students’ Federation demanding tribal status for the Moran-Motok community turned violent as security forces intervened.
The rally, initially peaceful, escalated when authorities fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, reportedly to prevent the symbolic burning of effigies.
Serious allegations have been raised against TSI Shankar Das of Tinsukia Sadar Police Station for alleged excessive force during the protest.

Both student unions, representing the Moran and Motok communities, have demanded immediate disciplinary action against Das.
The unions have issued a 24-hour ultimatum, warning of a district-wide bandh (shutdown) in Tinsukia on November 10 if their demands are not met, in protest against what they call a violation of their right to peaceful assembly.
