Guwahati, Dec 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma undertook a commendable initiative to enhance road safety in Guwahati ahead of Christmas Eve, braving the winter chill.

On December 20, Sarma actively participated in patrols with traffic police officials, personally inspecting the traffic situation to prevent fatalities caused by driving under the influence of alcohol. This initiative gained significance considering the recent surge in road fatalities attributed to negligent and rash driving.

The Chief Minister’s hands-on involvement and continuous presence on the streets reflected his unwavering dedication to public safety.

Collaborating with the Guwahati Police, his efforts yielded success, with no reported deaths from drunken driving on that particular night. The positive outcome and Sarma’s proactive approach resonated well with the public, who affectionately refer to him as “mama.”

In an earlier development on December 2, Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), G P Singh, addressed concerns related to road safety. Singh announced the commencement of a special drive on road safety on December 15, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring safer roads.

Acknowledging the recurring issue of a surge in road accidents during the new year, Singh mentioned regular monthly meetings involving all stakeholders, including Transport, NHAI, and other relevant departments. These meetings aimed to review and strategize road safety measures.

Underlining the significance of collaborative efforts, Singh stressed the involvement of various departments to effectively tackle the road safety issue.

He mentioned that regular instructions and advisories were issued to prioritize road safety during the festive season.

The upcoming special drive intends to further intensify these efforts, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to minimizing road accidents and ensuring safer road conditions.
