Guwahati, Feb 28: Senior Congress leader Rana Goswami resigned from his roles as the working President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and as an active member of the Indian National Congress on February 28.

Goswami, who had previously stepped down from his position as the organisational in-charge of Upper Assam, is anticipated to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 4, as per insider sources.

According to sources, Goswami is set to meet Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and later BJP National President JP Nadda on February 28. It is speculated that he might officially join the BJP on March 4 at around 11:29 am, after assessing the auspicious time for the joining date.

While General Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) KC Venugopal attempted to reach out to Goswami, the latter did not receive the call.

In his resignation letter addressed to APCC chief Bhupen Borah, Goswami cited ‘several political reasons’ for his decision.

He specifically mentioned stepping down from his position as the organisational in-charge of Upper Assam, covering the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, and Biswanath.

Earlier on February 14, two Congress MLAs, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das, announced their support for the government while remaining within the Congress party.

This move followed the actions of two other Congress MLAs, Sashi Kanta Das and former minister Siddique Ahmed, who had also aligned themselves with the government while maintaining their status as opposition party legislators.
