Guwahati, April 06: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam took action on April 5, issuing a show cause notice to the ruling BJP following allegations of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation raised by the CPI(M).

The CPI(M) accused the BJP of violating the MCC by conducting a socio-economic survey under the guise of collecting public data, allegedly aiming to increase beneficiaries under a government scheme.

The state BJP unit president has been summoned to respond by 10 am on April 8.

According to the CPI(M), the BJP distributed application forms for a socio-economic survey, promising to expand the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme, thereby breaching the MCC.

The CEO’s office clarified that while generic electoral promises are allowed, specific surveys, form distribution, and data collection are considered transactional and are prohibited under the MCC as they amount to elector inducement.

On the same issue, the Congress also filed a written complaint with the CEO’s office on April 5, further amplifying the scrutiny on the alleged MCC violation by the BJP.
