Guwahati, July 06: In a move aimed at encouraging and rewarding academic excellence, the Assam government has decided to provide scooters to meritorious students who have successfully passed the Higher Secondary (Class 12) examination. The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced the details of the initiative, stating that the state cabinet has approved the distribution of scooters to girl students who secured 60 percent and above marks in the recently concluded Higher Secondary examination. For boys, the cut-off mark has been set at 75 percent and above. This initiative seeks to recognize the hard work and academic achievements of deserving students.

To further enhance educational opportunities, the government also plans to distribute 3.78 lakh bicycles among students studying in Class 9 across the state. The state cabinet has allocated Rs 167 crore for this initiative, which aims to provide students with a means of transportation to facilitate their daily commute to school.

In addition to these education-focused initiatives, the state government has announced other important decisions during the cabinet meeting. Under the Orunodoi scheme, an additional 7 lakh beneficiaries will receive financial support of Rs 1250 per month starting from September 10, 2023. This expansion of the scheme will provide much-needed assistance to eligible individuals and families in the state.

Furthermore, the state government has expressed its interest in hosting the National Games and has submitted a request to the Indian Olympic Association. Assam aims to host the prestigious sporting event either in 2025 or 2027, showcasing its commitment to sports and providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talent at a national level.

The cabinet meeting also witnessed decisions to increase the reservation of seats for Other Backward Classes (OBCs)/More Other Backward Classes (MOBCs) in professional courses offered by Assam Agricultural University. The reservation percentage has been raised from 15 percent to 27 percent, aiming to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for students belonging to these communities.

Additionally, the cabinet approved the Assam Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (Facilitation of Establishment and Operation) Rules, 2023. This step will provide a conducive environment for the growth and development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the state, contributing to employment generation and economic progress.

The cabinet also granted approval to the draft of the amended Assam Food Security Rules, 2022, under the National Food Security Act, 2013, to expand the food security net in the state. This step reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for all citizens, especially those who are vulnerable and in need of support.
