Kolkata, May 12: Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, has stirred controversy by suggesting that the turmoil in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali area merely scratches the surface of more extensive issues pervading the state.

According to Saha, the unsettling events unfolding in Sandeshkhali serve as a warning sign, indicating broader systemic challenges within West Bengal.

He paints the picture of Sandeshkhali as merely the visible part of a much larger problem lurking beneath the surface.

His remarks come amidst a storm surrounding a sting video linked to the Sandeshkhali case, where several women accused former TMC leader Sheikh Shajahan and his associates of both land grabbing and sexual assault.

Shajahan currently faces incarceration for orchestrating an attack on an Enforcement Directorate team.

The controversy escalated with the emergence of a purported sting operation aired by a local channel.

In the video, a man, claiming to be a BJP worker, alleges that the accusers were manipulated into portraying false rape allegations against Shajahan at the behest of Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari.

However, the authenticity of the video remains unverified as the channel failed to authenticate its contents.

BJP’s West Bengal unit president, Sukanta Majumdar, accused the TMC of employing such videos as a means to deceive the public.

He juxtaposed these recordings with victim statements recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate, insinuating a deliberate attempt to manipulate public sentiment.

The Sandeshkhali debacle has reignited a bitter political rivalry between the TMC and BJP, exacerbating tensions ahead of the forthcoming panchayat polls in the state.
