Guwahati, Jan 31: In a momentous move aimed at fortifying food security and overall welfare, the Assam government launched a substantial initiative in January 2024, providing free ration cards to an additional 42 lakh beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

The inauguration of this expanded distribution was led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in his constituency, Jalukbari, signifying the state’s commitment to addressing food insecurity.

Addressing the development on social media, Chief Minister Sarma shared his sentiments, stating, “January has been a special month for the people of Assam. Over 42 lakh people have secured access to free ration, free healthcare & subsidized cooking gas through extensive Ration Card distribution programmes across the State.”

He visualized the ration card as a crucial protective boundary, a “Laxman Rekha,” ensuring that households do not succumb to poverty.

Furthermore, he outlined ambitious goals, aiming to incorporate all ration cardholders under the Orunodoi scheme by 2026.

The distribution event marked a pivotal moment in the state’s commitment to providing ample access to food for all citizens. Each family member entitled to the new ration card is eligible to receive 5 kilograms of rice every month at no cost, falling under the “anna sewa saptah” period, with the January deadline extending until January 31.

This expansion is expected to extend the NFSA’s reach to 10,73,479 households across Assam. Beyond food security, the initiative integrates health coverage, providing beneficiaries with a health cover of Rs 5 lakh in government hospitals and designated nursing homes within the state.

Moreover, the income limit for availing of a ration card has been raised from Rs 2 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh, widening the scope of the scheme to benefit a broader segment of the population.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that the government’s social-sector schemes, such as the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, prioritize the needs of disadvantaged sections of society. He underscored the commitment of the central administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support those in need.

Ration cardholders will also benefit from government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat and Ayushman Asom healthcare schemes. Plans are underway to provide life insurance and accidental insurance coverage for ration cardholders, enhancing the overall welfare measures associated with the ration card system.

This comprehensive approach to welfare, encompassing food security, health, and insurance benefits, underscores the Assam government’s dedication to elevating the living standards of its residents.

The distribution of ration cards is a testament to the state’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that no family is left behind in pursuing a secure and healthy life.
