Guwahati, Feb 08: The Assam government has initiated a significant overhaul of the state’s secondary education system by proposing the merger of two prominent examination boards.

The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), responsible for Class 10 examinations, and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), overseeing Class 12 exams, are slated to amalgamate into a unified entity under the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB).

The introduction of the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024, in the Assembly on February 7, 2024, marks a pivotal step towards streamlining secondary education governance in the state.

The primary objective behind this consolidation is to enhance the regulation, supervision, and development of secondary education in Assam. By bringing both boards under a single umbrella, the government aims to foster greater coherence and efficiency in educational administration.

Under the proposed framework, the ASSEB will be led by a chairman appointed by the government, supported by individual vice-chairmen overseeing distinct divisions. The board will comprise 21 members serving three-year terms, with the possibility of renewal for an additional period.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu underscored the rationale behind the bill, emphasizing the imperative to uphold and enhance standards and quality in school education across Assam. The ASSEB is envisioned as a proactive institution committed to driving educational excellence and equity throughout the state.

This legislative initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing and optimizing the state’s educational infrastructure.

By consolidating administrative functions and streamlining governance mechanisms, the ASSEB aims to create a more responsive and accountable framework for advancing secondary education in Assam.

The proposed merger is expected to promote synergy, collaboration, and innovation within the education sector, ultimately benefiting students, educators, and stakeholders across the state.

As Assam prepares to embark on this transformative journey, the ASSEB emerges as a cornerstone institution poised to shape the future of secondary education in the region.
