Assam Job Fair Flouts COVID-19 Guidelines, Thousands Accumulate

Assam, Dec 24: Several districts in Assam held job fairs for the unemployed on Thursday as desperation drove COVID-19 protocols for a toss.

First time since the outbreak of COVID-19, the National Career Service Project of the Centre is partnering with the State Directorate of Employment and Craftsman training to sponsor the job fair.

Many people were seeking employment in districts like Darrang, Nagaon, Dibrugarh, and Bongaigaon, according to state government sources.

While Covid protocols were urged to be maintained, a surge of over 5,000 aspiring candidates was unexpected in many districts.

A senior Assam government official says the government had no way of knowing how many job seekers would come.

Since Covid resulted in large numbers of youths becoming jobless, the job fair has shown overwhelming response, a source says.
