Durga Puja

Guwahati, Oct 14: As the nation welcomes the joyous occasion of Durga Puja, the atmosphere is brimming with enthusiasm as devotees partake in rituals on the early morning of October 14 during Mahalaya, signalling the commencement of the festive season.

Throughout the state of Assam, devotees are observing Mahalaya, a pivotal day in Hindu tradition. Mahalaya heralds the start of the Devi Paksha, considered an auspicious time to invoke the blessings of goddess Durga. Devotees are preparing for the early morning rituals, which include listening to the enchanting recitation of Mahishasura Mardini by the revered Birendra Krishna Bhadra.

Many will pay visits to riverbanks and other sacred sites to offer tarpan (ritual offerings) to their ancestors. On this auspicious day of Mahalaya, individuals conduct Pitru Tarpan and Pind Daan to seek prayers and salvation for their forebears. It is believed that these rituals provide solace and blessings to their ancestors.

Puja committees and organizers have invested meticulous efforts in crafting unique and intricate pandals that mirror the cultural diversity and creativity of the community.

Organizers and authorities are diligently implementing stringent safety measures to ensure the well-being of devotees. Adequate medical facilities have been arranged. As Mahalaya sets the stage for the festive season, the state eagerly anticipates the grand celebration of Durga Puja, commencing with Maha Sasthi.
