Guwahati, Jan 25: The Assam Police has transferred the case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, related to a clash during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, to the state CID for a thorough investigation. Assam DGP GP Singh announced the transfer, citing the “violation of various laws” during the yatra in Guwahati.

The clash occurred when the Assam government directed the yatra to avoid central Guwahati, leading to confrontations between Congress workers and police at the Khanapara crossing.

Rahul Gandhi criticized the government’s decision, asserting the strength of Congress workers.

The Congress had planned the yatra through central Guwahati, but authorities rerouted it, citing potential traffic disruptions and law and order concerns.

The clash resulted in a significant police presence, with Congress supporters attempting to breach barricades. Jairam Ramesh, a senior Congress leader, dismissed the police case as a “political FIR” without factual basis, vowing to explore legal remedies.

He thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for bringing publicity to the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra through his actions.

The yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, began on January 14 in Manipur and will conclude on March 20 in Mumbai.

The Assam leg, spanning from January 18 to January 25, covers 833 km in 17 districts. The overall yatra aims to cover 6,713 km in 67 days, passing through 110 districts in 15 states.
