Shillong, Jan 25: On February 16, the Meghalaya Government will pay homage to the legacy of the prominent freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem by unveiling a life-size statue and bust in Dhaka.

A delegation led by Minister Paul Lyngdoh and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar will represent the state at this significant event, reflecting the government’s commitment to honoring the contributions of freedom fighters.

The Meghalaya government is coordinating with the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh to organize and facilitate the program, ensuring a dignified and memorable occasion.

U Tirot Sing Syiem is among the three most renowned freedom fighters from Meghalaya, standing alongside U Kiang Nongbah from Jaintia Hills and Pa Togan Sangma from Garo Hills.

These figures played pivotal roles in resisting British colonial rule, and their bravery and sacrifices are celebrated in the history of the region.

U Kiang Nongbah, a JaiƱtia freedom fighter, led a significant uprising against the British and was publicly hanged on December 30, 1862, at Iawmusiang in Jowai town in West Jaintia Hills district.

The unveiling of U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue symbolizes the enduring respect and remembrance of the sacrifices made by these freedom fighters for their homeland.

Beyond being a tribute to U Tirot Sing Syiem’s significant contribution to the fight for freedom, this event serves as a powerful symbol of Meghalaya‘s rich history and cultural heritage.

It highlights the state’s commitment to preserving and showcasing the stories of its heroes, fostering a sense of pride and patriotism among its residents.
