Guwahati, Sept 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that the state will officially ban polygamy by December 2023. This historic decision follows extensive public consultations and demonstrates Assam’s unwavering commitment to addressing societal issues and safeguarding the rights of its citizens.

Polygamy, the practice of having multiple spouses concurrently, has sparked concerns in various regions of India, including Assam, where it has raised questions about gender equality, women’s rights, and social cohesion. Acknowledging the need for reform, the Assam government initiated a comprehensive process of public consultation to gauge public sentiment and gather feedback on this matter.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma elaborated, stating, “In the Assam Assembly, we are introducing legislation to prohibit polygamy in our state. We have conducted public consultations and diligently reviewed the concerns and perspectives expressed by various stakeholders.”

Following extensive public consultations, the Assam government is actively engaged in crafting a comprehensive legal framework to address and prohibit polygamy within the state. This legislation aims to bring about vital legal reforms that uphold gender equality and safeguard the rights of women.
