cyclone Bengal

1. A cyclone is anticipated to form over the Bay of Bengal this weekend, says IMD.
2. A Low-pressure area in the South Andaman Sea is set to intensify into a depression.
3. Cyclonic storm Michaung is expected to develop in the Southwest Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.

Weather, Nov 29: A cyclone is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal around the weekend, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea is predicted to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, eventually turning into cyclonic storm Michaung over the Southwest and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours.

While there is no consensus among models on its direction, some indicate that the cyclone may move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. The IMD notes that the cyclone has the potential to intensify into a severe cyclone, influenced by above-normal temperatures and low wind shear in the central Bay of Bengal.

On Tuesday, a western disturbance, along with a trough in mid and upper-tropospheric westerlies, induced a cyclonic circulation over Southeast Rajasthan and adjoining West Madhya Pradesh. Another cyclonic circulation was observed over South Sri Lanka and its neighborhoods.

A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect the Western Himalayan region late on Wednesday. Additionally, a trough in easterlies is likely to run from the Southeast Arabian Sea to North Maharashtra across Kerala and Coastal Karnataka from Wednesday to Friday, causing widespread rainfall due to an interaction between middle-level westerlies and lower-level easterlies over the central parts of the country.

The IMD director general, M Mohapatra, explained that the intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and hail observed in Western India over the past few days were the result of the interaction between the easterly wave from the northeast monsoon and an active western disturbance.

Although the phase-lock has weakened, leading to a reduction in rainfall intensity, rain is expected to continue in Uttarakhand, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Bihar.
