Gangtok, Oct 06: The Central Government has given its approval for the release of Rs 44.80 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the fiscal year 2023-24 to aid the victims of the devastating flash floods in Sikkim. These funds are earmarked for relief measures aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by the recent flash floods.

The decision to release these funds was officially sanctioned by the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah. Furthermore, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken swift action by constituting an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT). The primary purpose of this team is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the extensive damages caused by the flash floods. Subsequent to this evaluation, additional assistance will be provided based on the team’s recommendations and findings.

The flash floods that wreaked havoc in Sikkim were triggered by a combination of factors, including a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), cloud burst, and rapid onset of flash floods. The ensuing devastation caused widespread destruction and left a trail of destruction in its wake.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation and the need for swift action, the Central Government has been closely monitoring developments and actively supporting the Sikkim Government’s response efforts. This assistance includes the deployment of the highly trained and specialized National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the deployment of Indian Air Force helicopters, and the mobilization of Army personnel to provide critical support in affected areas. Additionally, technical teams from various ministries have been dispatched to assist with the vital task of restoring damaged infrastructure.
