Guwahati, April 27: In the upcoming Assam Lok Sabha elections of 2024, the Congress is intensifying its campaign efforts in northeastern Assam, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Priyanka Gandhi scheduled to address key constituencies like Barpeta and Dhubri on April 27 and May 1 respectively.
On April 27, Mallikarjun Kharge will kickstart the party’s campaign with a press conference in Guwahati, followed by a public meeting in Barpeta, where Congress nominee Mira Borthakur Goswami is contesting against BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi.
The Barpeta seat has been a point of contention after the Congress named Deep Gayan as its candidate, causing disapproval from ally CPI-M.
Despite the disagreement, the Congress stuck with its candidate, leading CPI-M to nominate Manoranjan Talukdar, making it a three-way contest against AGP leader Phani Bhushan Chowdhury, the joint nominee of the ruling alliance.

In Dhubri, traditionally a Congress stronghold, the party has fielded Rakibul Hussain against former ally AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal.
In the 2019 national polls, Congress secured only three out of 14 seats in Assam, while the BJP won nine seats. However, Congress aims to regain ground with its current campaign efforts.
Previously, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi campaigned in Jorhat and Dibrugarh, where Gaurab Gogoi contested against BJP’s Topon Gogoi in Jorhat.
Dibrugarh was allotted to ally Assam Jatiya Parishad, with leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi facing BJP’s Sarbananda Sonowal and AAP’s Manoj Dhanowar.
