Guwahati, Dec 19: As the deadline for receiving applications for Congress tickets in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam approaches, a total of 47 aspirants have submitted their applications, signaling active participation within the party.

Notably, none of the three incumbent Congress MPs in Assam, including Pradyut Bordoloi from Nagaon and Gaurav Gogoi from Kaliabor, have confirmed their candidacy yet.

While Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque collected his application form on Monday, the other two MPs have yet to take this step. The deadline for accepting applications is set to end on Tuesday, but there is a possibility of an extension due to the ongoing Parliament session, which has kept party leaders occupied.

The application process began on December 11, with each candidate required to deposit a fee of Rs one lakh, as outlined in a circular issued by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The party is experiencing a notable interest in candidacy, with several women aspirants among the applicants.

Given the Congress’s involvement in a 15-member opposition forum in the state, aimed at contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections collectively, certain constituencies will be excluded from Congress candidates. Applicants for such constituencies will receive a refund of their fees, according to the circular.

The 15-party United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA) aligns with the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) and includes AJP, Raijor Dal, CPI(M), CPI, Jatiya Dal-Asom, NCP, RJD, Janata Dal (U), TMC, CPI(ML), and AAP. The UOFA recently held a two-day conclave to strategize for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, emphasizing collaborative efforts among opposition parties.
