1. Assam Congress plans an independent contest in 12 Lok Sabha seats.
2. The party seeks a resurgence in state politics.
3. Aims to regain former stronghold amid evolving political scenario.

Guwahati, Feb 16: In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party in Assam is poised to take an independent stance, intending to contest in 12 constituencies, as per insider reports.

Once a formidable force in the state’s political arena, the party aims to reclaim its prominence amidst the shifting dynamics of Assam’s political landscape.

The decision to go solo underscores the party’s determination to carve its path forward and effectively counter the ruling party.

Following extensive deliberations within the party’s leadership, this strategy emerged as the preferred course of action to navigate the electoral challenges ahead.

While the identities of the candidates representing the Congress in these constituencies are yet to be unveiled, the party has already made strategic concessions.

Aligning with the INDI alliance, the Congress has relinquished the Barpeta seat to the CPI(M) and allocated the Dibrugarh constituency to Lurin Jyoti Gogoi of AJP.

This move follows the recent discord between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), sparked by differences during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Consequently, the state unit of the Congress has distanced itself from any potential alliances with the TMC, opting instead to chart an independent electoral course.

The decision reflects a calculated electoral strategy on the part of the Congress, indicating confidence in its cadre and candidates, as well as a clear vision for the impending polls in Assam.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, analysts and observers will closely monitor candidate announcements and the broader implications of this decision on the state’s electoral dynamics.

In anticipation and speculation, the Congress party’s independent stance sets the stage for a keenly contested electoral battle in Assam, with implications reverberating far beyond the confines of the state.
