vegetable prices Assam

Guwahati, July 15: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent remarks on the rising prices of vegetables in the state have sparked controversy, with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal accusing him of creating a divide between Muslims and the Assamese people. Ajmal’s statement comes in response to Sarma’s comments linking the price rise to the “Miya” (Muslim) vendors in the city.

Speaking to the media, Ajmal expressed his disappointment with Sarma’s remarks, calling them demeaning and hurtful towards the minority community. He criticized the Chief Minister for stating that “Miya” vendors would not be allowed to sell vegetables and spices in Guwahati, emphasizing that such statements are inappropriate for a person in Sarma’s position.

Ajmal warned that such statements could create a rift between Muslims and their fellow Assamese citizens, including the youth, and hold the government responsible for any resulting unrest.

Sarma had previously attributed the soaring vegetable prices in Guwahati to vendors belonging to the “Miyan” community. He claimed that most of the vendors selling vegetables at inflated rates were from this community. This statement drew criticism from various quarters, including All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who accused certain groups of unfairly blaming the Muslim community for their own failures.

The controversy surrounding Sarma’s remarks highlights the delicate nature of communal relations and the need for responsible language from public figures. Assam, like many other states in India, is characterized by its diverse population, and maintaining communal harmony is crucial for its progress and stability.

Political leaders have a responsibility to promote unity, understanding, and respect among different communities. Their words and actions have the power to either bridge gaps or widen divides. It is important for leaders to exercise restraint and avoid making statements that could stigmatize or marginalize any particular community.

The Assam Chief Minister’s Office clarified that Sarma’s remarks were not intended to target any specific community but were made in the context of addressing the issue of rising vegetable prices. However, the impact of such statements cannot be ignored, as they contribute to the overall social and political climate.

As Assam’s Chief Minister, Sarma plays a crucial role in leading the state and representing all its citizens. It is essential for him to address the concerns raised by various communities and work towards fostering inclusivity and understanding. Efforts should be made to promote dialogue, bridge differences, and address socio-economic issues that affect all sections of society.

The controversy surrounding Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks on the rising vegetable prices has brought to the forefront the need for responsible and inclusive language from public figures. Leaders must strive to build bridges, promote unity, and address the concerns of all communities to ensure a harmonious and prosperous society.
