Guwahati, May 11: India’s maiden river terminal is poised to emerge in Guwahati, Assam, marking a monumental stride in the nation’s transportation and logistics domain.
This pioneering project is slated to invigorate Assam’s economy, promising streamlined transportation of goods and passengers alike.
Part of a comprehensive strategy to augment connectivity and fuel economic development in the region, the river terminal’s establishment heralds a new era of progress.
On May 13, 2022, Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated construction works on the Guwahati Gateway Ghat (GGG), envisaged as India’s premier river ferry terminal.

Supported by funding from the World Bank, this initiative is poised to redefine Assam’s waterborne transportation landscape. Guwahati, nestled on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, stands as the largest urban center in northeastern India.
Crafted by the Ports & Waterways teams in India, the GGG is designed to offer a host of amenities, including cafes, a canteen, and accessibility ramps.
With a commitment to ensuring safety and comfort, the GGG promises to deliver seamless river transportation services round the clock, catering to passengers from Guwahati and adjacent river access points, colloquially termed ‘ghats.’
