Guwahati, Dec 20: As winter tightens its grip, Guwahati and other parts of Assam are experiencing a significant reduction in visibility due to dense fog.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fog alert for six northeastern states, including Assam, with expectations that this weather condition will persist for the next two days.

Flight operations at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport were impacted on December 11, leading to overcrowding at the passenger terminal.

The Adani Group-controlled facility has advised passengers to check with airlines for departure timings.

Several Guwahati-bound flights have faced delays due to low visibility. Dense fog, particularly in the early morning hours, is affecting daily life and has the potential to disrupt travel plans.

Other Assam cities like Jorhat, Tezpur, and Dhubri, as well as locations in Meghalaya and Mizoram, have also reported dense fog. The Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD has noted similar conditions in Kailashahar and Agartala in Tripura.

The forecast includes the possibility of light rain in isolated areas across the northeastern states in the next 24 hours, contributing to persistent fog or mist during the morning, followed by partly cloudy skies later in the day.

Guwahati is expected to experience maximum and minimum temperatures of around 26°C and 16°C, respectively.

The dense fog is not limited to the northeast; it has also affected Delhi, where the minimum temperature dropped to 6°C, intensifying cold wave conditions.

The city woke up to a chilly morning covered in dense fog, continuing the trend of sub-10-degree Celsius temperatures.

Residents and travelers in these regions are advised to stay updated on the latest weather reports and exercise caution during commuting, especially in the early morning and night hours when visibility may be severely compromised.
