Agartala, Jan 08: Dr. Manik Saha, who received his B.D.S. and M.D.S. in “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” degrees is now the chief minister of Tripura. Saha took oath as the 11th Chief Minister of Tripura on 15 May 2022.


Saha’s journey from a Dentist to the CM Tripura

Manik Saha was born on January 8, 1953, in Agartala, Tripura.

After practicing for almost a decade, Manik Saha, in 1991, enrolled in the prestigious King George’s Medical College (KGMC) at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh; where he completed his Post-Graduation and earned his Master of Dental Surgery degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Saha was a member of the Indian National Congress before joining Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016. Before joining the Indian National Congress, Manik Saha was a teacher at the Tripura Medical College in Hapania.

He became the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tripura unit from 2020 to 2022.

In April 2022, Saha was elected as MLA and became Tripura’s, Chief Minister. He is also the president of the Tripura Cricket Association. He is also a state-level badminton player.

Since the state of Tripura has only one seat of representation in the Rajya Sabha, Manik Saha, hence, is the only Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Tripura.

He successfully secured 40 out of 60 seats in the Tripura Assembly and was elected as the Member of Parliament.

On 14 May 2022, just a year before assembly polls in the state, Biplab Kumar Deb resigned from his post. After a hurriedly called legislature party meeting, BJP announced Saha’s name as his successor and said he would extend cooperation to the new chief minister. Saha took oath as the 11th Chief Minister of Tripura on 15 May 2022.
