Weather Update, June 15: North and central India continue to endure intense heat, while southern, western, eastern, and northeastern regions brace for heavy rainfall until June 19, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, the IMD issued orange and red alerts due to temperatures ranging from 44 to 46 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions were observed in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, and Chandigarh.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected in various parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Bihar until June 19.

Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in Meghalaya from June 15 to 19, and in Assam from June 17 to 19. Scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is forecasted for parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha over the next five days.

The IMD also anticipates fairly widespread to widespread rainfall in Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Odisha between June 17 and 19, and in east Bihar on June 18 and 19.

The Southwest Monsoon is expected to advance further into Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of West Bengal, and parts of Bihar in the next four to five days.

The delayed progress of the Southwest Monsoon has prolonged the heatwave in north and central India, with a 4 percent deficit in cumulative monsoon rainfall reported across the country for the first 12 days of the season. Northwest India has received 53 percent less rainfall than normal, while southern India has experienced 60 percent more rainfall than usual during June 1-12.

The monsoon is forecasted to reach Delhi by the end of June, around June 27, providing relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions.
