1. Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police conducted a joint operation in Melbuk, Champhai district, Mizoram.

Aizawl, Feb 13: In a joint operation conducted by Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, 300 bags of dry areca nuts and 150 bags of green areca were seized in the general area of Melbuk under Champhai district in Mizoram.

The seized consignment, weighing a total of 36,000 kg, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.52 crore in the international market.

Three trucks bearing registration numbers MZ 01J 0662, MZ 01F 1037, and MZ 01J 3381 were intercepted during the operation, leading to the recovery of the illegal areca nuts.

Three individuals, identified as Lalnuntluanga (39), Lalruatkima (40), and Malsawmtlaunga (30), have been detained in connection with the incident. They are residents of Aizawl and Kolasib.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the detainees.

This seizure follows a similar incident on February 7, 2024, when Assam Rifles and the Customs Preventive Force recovered 512 bags of areca nuts valued at Rs 2.51 crore in the Ruantlang Tiau River Road area of Champhai.

The joint operation, based on specific intelligence, resulted in the seizure of the entire consignment, which was subsequently handed over to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai for further legal action.
