IMD

Weather Update, Aug 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a weather forecast that is capturing the attention of residents and authorities alike. Over the next two to three days, the IMD predicts isolated heavy rainfall activity in northeast India and Sikkim, indicating the likelihood of substantial precipitation in these regions.

Simultaneously, heavy rainfall is anticipated in other parts of the country, including Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bihar, albeit with an expected decrease in intensity following tomorrow’s forecasts. Furthermore, the weather agency has forecast subdued rainfall activity across various other regions in the upcoming week.

Orange Alerts for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya

With the impending heavy rainfall, the IMD has issued orange alerts for several areas. On the 26th of August, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are under an orange alert. This alert signifies the potential for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall and even the possibility of extreme downpours, with expected precipitation ranging from 115.6 to 204.4 mm.

Similarly, Arunachal Pradesh is placed under an orange alert for both the 26th and 27th of August. During these days, the region is likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, again with precipitation levels in the range of 115.6 to 204.4 mm.

Assam and Meghalaya are also under an orange alert for the same period, August 26th and 27th. Residents in these areas should prepare for the likelihood of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, mirroring the conditions expected in Arunachal Pradesh.

Preparedness and Safety Measures

During periods of heavy rainfall, it is paramount for residents, local authorities, and disaster management teams to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to ensure safety. Here are some key considerations:

  1. Stay Informed: Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and alerts issued by the IMD. Timely information is critical for making informed decisions.
  2. Flood Preparedness: Residents in flood-prone areas should be prepared for potential flooding. This includes having emergency kits, knowing evacuation routes, and heeding evacuation orders if issued.
  3. Landslide Awareness: Hilly and mountainous regions, such as parts of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, should be cautious about the heightened risk of landslides. Avoid traveling in vulnerable areas during heavy rainfall.
  4. Infrastructure Safety: Local authorities should monitor infrastructure like dams and reservoirs to prevent overflow and downstream flooding.
  5. Agricultural Planning: Farmers should adapt their practices to accommodate the anticipated rainfall. Proper drainage and crop protection measures can help mitigate damage.
  6. Travel Caution: Travelers should exercise caution, especially on roads and railways that may be affected by landslides or flooding.
  7. Community Engagement: Communities should work together to support vulnerable individuals and ensure a coordinated response to emergencies.

The IMD’s weather forecast and orange alerts serve as critical tools for preparedness and response. With proactive measures and a focus on safety, residents and authorities can navigate these weather challenges with resilience. Stay safe, stay informed, and take precautions to protect lives and property.
