Kolkata, Feb 02: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized the arrest of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, describing him as a “powerful tribal leader” and expressing solidarity as a “close friend.”

The Trinamool supremo condemned what she called a “vindictive act” by BJP-backed central agencies, portraying it as a planned conspiracy to undermine a popularly elected government.

Mamata Banerjee pledged unwavering support for Hemant Soren, emphasizing her dedication to protecting democracy during these challenging times. She asserted that the resilient people of Jharkhand would respond resoundingly and emerge victorious in this crucial battle.

Trinamool Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien echoed Mamata Banerjee’s sentiments, announcing a TMC walkout from both Houses of Parliament to protest what they deemed the brazen misuse of agencies to undermine elected representatives.

Hemant Soren’s arrest on January 31, linked to a money laundering case involving the “illegal” possession of extensive land and alleged association with the “land mafia,” triggered strong reactions from opposition parties.

Trinamool Congress leaders walked out of both Houses of Parliament, alleging the misuse of central agencies. Opposition parties, led by the Congress, also walked out of the Rajya Sabha over the Jharkhand Governor’s failure to make interim arrangements for governance after Soren’s resignation as Chief Minister.

In the latest development, Hemant Soren was sent to five-day custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a land fraud case. The Supreme Court refused to hear Soren’s petition challenging his ED arrest, directing him to approach the Jharkhand High Court for legal recourse.
